“What is your favorite subject?” asked the teacher.
“Reading.” answered Melissa.
“Math.” replied Paul.
“Lunch.” said Alan.
“Why reading?” asked the teacher.
“I like stories about people and the different ways that they live.”
“It’s logical. There is a clear right and wrong.”
We all have fond memories of school, a favorite subject, and teacher. I’m like Melissa, I love to read. Mr. John Mahoney who taught Latin was my favorite teacher.
Schools are a place to learn and provide a community for students. When I was a student, I never thought much about the notebooks, paper, art supplies, glue, and other materials that the teachers gave us. I assumed the school supplied the teachers the materials that they needed. However, this is not always true. Teachers often use their own money to pay for the pens, pencils, papers, and other supplies that they give to their students.
50 States, 50 Donations
DonorsChoose is a site that allows teachers to crowd fund money for supplies, professional development, and student projects. My goal for 2018 is to donate money to one teacher request in each of the 50 states. A quick sample of some of the requests include:
You can also donate specifically to requests:
I look forward to fulfilling this goal. DonorsChoose has opened my eyes to the ideas and needs of the many fine and dedicated teachers in the United States. It also provides me a personal view of one of the challenges that teachers face each school year.
I will share the projects I donate to and write about why I chose them. As always, please feel welcome to share your thoughts with me.
